For a couple of years a system of machine dictionaries (a lexical database for the Bulgarian language) and a morphological processor have been developed at the Department of Computer Science of the University of Plovdiv. Machine dictionaries are the most difficult components of the Natural Language Systems to construct. That's why they are in the field of interests of many specialists in the area of Philology (Lexicology, Morphology, Syntax) and Computational Linguistics. The verifying of such a large amount of information is impossible in the shortest time. Placing the lexical database (and a system for its management) at interested specialists' disposal leads to a loss of immediate return contact with these specialists. Therefore the most convenient way to place the lexical resources at users' disposal is the computer network. The system for lexical database management is situated on a WEB server. The remote access to the system is via the convenient common gateway interface (CGI). It allows to send a request to the system (working under the WINDOWS'95 control), and receive the result through the network. The main advantage of this approach is the opportunity for multiple access of many users to the lexical resources and the possibility for substantial test of the system. The very important tool which the network allows is the immediate user feedback in case of problems and errors. In this manner a short time test of the system and the lexical database is feasible. On the other hand some extensions of the system requested by the user are realisable.
The main functions of the system are:
- morphological analysis of the user's input sentence in the Bulgarian language.
- checking of the syntactic agreement between two Bulgarian words;
- generation of the morphological paradigm of an arbitrary wordform;
- lexical database queries.
New: Bulgarian-English Dictionary
The perspectives are in the following directions:
- extending of the system functions and increasing the number of queries;
- setting up of a Bulgarian text corpus on the server for users' investigation;
- development of tools for distance learning of Lexicology and Morphology using the system;
